Your Style Won’t “Just Show Up” – Here’s What Actually Works

Feb 5, 2026

You might hear other painters say, "Your style will just show up eventually."

Comforting.

But not helpful when you stand at your paint table, stuck on what to paint next.

Most painters who feel stuck don't lack ideas or effort. Actually, they may have learned too much.

When you've absorbed advice from many teachers, styles, and tutorials, everything blurs. One instructor says plan everything. Another says, "Be spontaneous!" You're trying to paint like everyone else instead of discovering how YOU actually paint. Nothing feels wrong, but nothing feels like you, either.

So you try harder. Second-guess more. And painting stops being fun.

To gain your own voice,

forget about having it heard.

—Allen Ginsberg

Here's the shift:

There is no "right way" in art.

Finding your style isn't about choosing the right look. It's about how you work best.

Inside Watercolor In Flow, there's a lesson called "Discover Your Natural Painting Process" where I break this down into four painting identities. I paint the same sunflower four different ways. You see how the approach changes everything.

Work with your natural tendencies? Painting feels easier.

Work against them? Frustration shows up fast.

The full lesson is included in Watercolor In Flow.

Join before February 11 to bring your 'Is this really me?' questions to our live Q&A.

P.S. I surprised myself filming this lesson. Turns out I loved painting in a style I rarely use, which proves the whole point!

Watercolor Notes June 18, 2026 In this issue Reader responses to last week’s newsletter My crazy day What’s available Question of the week Looking Back Hi Reader,In my last newsletter, I wrote about creative resistance, the invisible force field that shows up right when you’re supposed to be painting. I used the analogy of magnets that I played with as a kid. No matter how hard you push the opposing poles together, they won’t go. That’s what resistance feels like, not laziness, just a force…

Resistance with a capital R

Watercolor Notes:Resistance with a capital R A recent plein air painting Hi Reader, Here’s a very random analogy for you, so stick with me…growing up on a ranch, there were always a couple of cow magnets in my dad’s animal-medical kit. I played with them as a kid and no matter how you tried to push the opposing sides together, they just wouldn’t go. There was this invisible force field of resistance between them, and I could feel the push against my hands. (In case you’re wondering, cow…

The Game of Painting

The Game of Painting

Watercolor Notes Hi Reader, I hope your May has been a creative one so far. I took Ellie to the beach yesterday and she dug a big hole. What she really loves is rescuing a small stick from the depths of the sand. If I find a stick and push it down into the hole she’s already dug, the game really begins. It’s serious work and play at the same time. She has to problem-solve and that’s what she loves most. This is similar to the reason why I enjoy watercolor painting so much. Painting is one…
